I have been wanting to read this book for a while now. I instantly fell in love with Jessie and Pietr. They had such a love/hate relationship in the beginning or so it seemed....lol. I could so relate to Jessie's way of thinking. When it comes to her friends she is a people pleaser much to her demise. Let us not forget Pietr, the brooding, charming, handsome boy with an air of the bad boy in him. At first you think he is just an oblivious male who seems to think he is forever wasting his time away. BUT we come to learn that is only a mask he projects to others around him without his notice. Well, not everyone, with Jessie Pietr finds a kindred spirit, a person he wants to share all aspects of his life with. This book also has two terrible ticking time bombs. One involving Jessie's mother's accident and Jessie's "best friend" Sarah and the other being Pietr's family secret. This book had me hooked with the constant push/pull between Jessie and Pietr feelings. They (mostly Jessie) kept pushing each other away for Sarah's sake but were constantly pulled together by a force greater than they could possibly fathom. This book had it all teen angst, big dark secrets, A Russian Mafia, even dare I say a stand-off of sorts. There is so much I want to say about this book but I am so afraid I will give some important piece away. EVERYONE needs to read this precious treasure for themselves and get swept away in the world that is Jessie and Pietr. The only sad part for me was how quickly the book ended. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this book. Book 2 in this series Secrets and Shadows: A 13 To Life Novel is due out February 15,2011. On a scale of 1-10 I give this book a resounding 10. I am on the edge of my seat in anticipation of book 2.
