Interview And Giveaway With Author Beth Williamson/Emma Lang

Today I have the great pleasure of interviewing author Beth Williamson (who also writes under the name of Emma Lang). She is so nice and giving of her time and a paperback copy of her book Brody (Circle Eight Series Book #2). I have read it and LOVED it (review coming soon). To get your hands on your very own copy of Brody all you need to do is leave a meaningful comment with your e-mail address. Giveaway is US only and ends August 22,2012 at 11:59 PM EST.

1) Did you always want to be a writer or did you see yourself taking a different career path?

I've always been a writer. Realization came in third grade when my teacher told my mom I wrote "lovely poetry" - that was when I knew I wanted to write. I have been involved with many different types of writing from being a newspaper reporter, a poet, a technical writer (my current full-time career), and a novelist.

2) How did you come up with your Circle Eight series and can you tell us a little bit about your new book Brody?

I love to write series about a family, traditional or non-traditional. I wanted to create a new family series in a timeframe. I decided on the Republic of Texas, an important time in Texas history and one that required you to be as tough as the land itself.

Brody Armstrong first appeared in the Circle Eight: Matthew as the investigator for the crimes committed against the Graham family. Black hair, ice blue eyes and an attitude to match, Brody was a mysterious force who needed to return for his own story, The Circle Eight: Brody. He wears a black hat and is hard as the land he protects. Fortunately for him, Olivia Graham is just as tough and stubborn as Brody. Clash of the Titans, y'all. :)

BRODY is a rough, sexy, intense and violent story. Quite different from MATTHEW in that it’s a road romance and there is plenty of guns and blood. The story almost told itself – the touch Texas Ranger and the outspoken Olivia Graham. It is super hot in terms of the heat level but that’s how the characters wanted it. ;)

3) Your Circle Eight series you chose to write as Emma Lang. How is that different compared to your writing as Beth Williamson?

It's not multiple personalities, I swear! LOL. The truth is rather boring - I write under two different names due to a publisher request. My writing style is the same, regardless of the pen name, and the books are generally in the same genre - historical western. I try to make it as seamless as possible - with one website etc.

4) What do you find most challenging about writing?

Finding the balance between my writing and real life. I have a full-time job, a husband, a house (and mortgage), two kids (20 and 16) and a family to spend time with. I feel gobs of guilt for not spending more time on family stuff. It's been a couple months since I saw my sister and she lives 30 miles from me! LOL. I have to find that balance and be diligent about keeping it.

5) If you could check off one or two things from your bucket list what would they be and why?

Ooh, I like this question! I want to visit Australia and New Zealand - DH and I have had a dream trip in mind since we got married 22 years ago. And now I have plenty of peeps to visit while I'm there. :)

6) Are there any writers/authors who have inspired you and what author's do you like to read?

Some of my all-time favorite authors - Stephen King, Anne Rice (who was at RT and I missed her!), Elizabeth Lowell, Johanna Lindsey, Nora Roberts and Kathleen Woodiwiss (I'm so sad I never got to meet her). I read all kinds of books and genres - my favorite genre is historical romance but I will try anything!

7) If you were to throw a dinner party for anyone living or dead who would you invite and why?

This is a tough one! I think I'd invite women authors from the 19th century, like the Bronte sisters, Emily Dickinson, Mary Shelley, Louisa May Alcott and George Eliot. What a time we'd have comparing notes on publishing then and now. :)

8) I am a huge music fanatic, and some authors are now including playlist at the back of their books that helped inspire their stories so, my question for you is do you have a playlist that helps inspire you or is there any other thing that helps to set your writing mood?

I don't necessarily have a playlist but music plays an important part of my creative process. I *love* music, all genres - I have a very eclectic mix of MP3s. :) When I write, I listen to the style of music that lends itself to the type of scene I'm writing. For example, I like to listen to AC/DC when I write sex scenes. Hee!

9) What do you hope people take away from your Circle Eight Series?

I hope people come away feeling hope, love and with that catharsis that can only come from finishing a good story. I also hope they get involved with the family, come to love them as much I do and wait for each book in the series with a smile and anticipation.

10) What do you have coming up next (i.e. another book, or perhaps a book signings)?

Let's see, I'll be at Authors After Dark in New Orleans in August and Lora Leigh's Reader Appreciation weekend (RAW) in September.

For everyone who has read BRODY, stay tuned for CALEB, the next book in the series, due in 2013 (no publication date yet but very soon!). It’s written and ready to roll!

I have two more books I'm waiting for dates on in 2013 - stay tuned!
